Thailand has confirmed its first case of the deadly Mpox virus Clade Ib, marking the first occurrence in Asia : Monkeypox virus
Attention! Thailand has identified Asia's first case of the new Mpox virus strain. Please review the details regarding symptoms and treatment options
Thailand has identified a new mutated strain of the pox virus as the infection continues to spread to additional countries, following the World Health Organization's (WHO) declaration of the outbreak in Africa as a new global health emergency.
According to Thailand's health ministry, the individual who tested positive for clade Ib is a European male who arrived in Bangkok last week from Africa. Authorities have traced 43 close contacts of the patient and have placed them under surveillance.
What is Mpox Clade Ib, and how does it spread?
The Clade IIb variant, which was prominent during the 2022 outbreak, primarily spread through sexual contact, particularly among men who have sex with men. However, behavioural changes and vaccination efforts eventually helped to reduce its transmission.
Epidemiologists have observed that Clade Ib seems to spread mainly through heterosexual sexual contact. In contrast, another subtype, Clade Ia, is transmitted through household contact, exposure to infected animals, and sexual interactions. Young children have been identified as the most vulnerable group for Clade Ia.
On Wednesday, Thai officials confirmed that a 66-year-old European man, who had been working in an African country experiencing an outbreak, tested positive for the virus.
While the specific country was not disclosed, it was noted that the man has a residence in Thailand and did not exhibit severe symptoms. He had travelled from Africa, with a layover in the Middle East, and arrived in Thailand on the evening of August 14.
By the following morning, he began to show signs of a fever and small skin bumps.
**Doctors Advise Public to Take Precautions**
Dr. Thongchai Keeratihuttayakorn, the General Director of Thailand's Disease Control Department, has urged the public to adopt specific precautions. He stated, "Individuals should wash their hands with soap or alcohol gel sanitiser, avoid close contact with strangers, steer clear of areas where outbreaks have occurred, and keep away from rodents such as rats and squirrels in those locations."
Currently, Thailand's Department of Disease Control is monitoring 43 individuals who have been close to the infected man. So far, none have exhibited symptoms, but monitoring will continue for 21 days.
What is Thailand doing to control the spread of mpox?
Thailand is enhancing health control measures for travellers returning from regions experiencing mpox outbreaks. These travellers are required to register with the Thai Health Pass and undergo a thorough screening process.
The measures include multiple checks for anyone with a temperature exceeding 36.8 degrees Celsius (98.2 degrees Fahrenheit).
Health workers will also look for signs of rashes or skin lesions. Individuals exhibiting additional symptoms consistent with mpox will be isolated and tested. Travellers from high-risk countries are strongly encouraged to self-report any symptoms.
Authorities are preparing 60 rooms specifically for quarantine purposes. Since 2022, Thailand has recorded over 800 cases of the earlier Clade IIb variant of mpox.
Formerly known as monkeypox, the virus can be transmitted through contact with infected animals or individuals, consumption of contaminated meat, sexual contact, or in utero transmission.
